About Living Walls
Green living walls are an exciting development in sustainable construction and environmental engineering, providing eye level, vertical greening with a structural and self sustaining support system. They provide facade greening, creating contemporary living vertical architecture in urban environments. Many of the world's existing installations appear to be primarily motivated by art and the visual impact they provide. This is important, however, we believe there are very sound ecological reasons to install green living walls.
We would be happy to meet with you to discuss your ideas from which we can develop a concept and planting design. From there, we will then design the structural support framework, if required, to suit the location along with the type of irrigation system and maintenance programme needed.
Our planting design is entirely bespoke to each project, bringing your vision to life. Alternatively, we can share our specialist living wall knowledge with the Architect or Designer of your choice, together we will create an attractive, sustainable feature.
The WallPlanter System
Some WallPlanter System examples
The benefits
- Efficient use of vertical surfaces in inner city spaces
- Encourages biodiversity
- Significant reduction of sub-micron particle pollution,
improving air quality - Aesthetically pleasing alternative to enhance an old
existing building or newbuild
Specification
- Planter box weight load with screens (3900mm) not
exceeding 1450kg saturated - Dimensions 500mm x 500mm x 3900mm
- Optional lengths (2600mm and 1300mm size specific
dimensions) are possible - Screens in planters can be grown to a maximum height of
2200mm, total height with screen in planter box is 2850mm - A robust support structure will be required to support the
planter boxes due to the weight. This can be installed from
ground level or be attached directly to a building (dependent
on wall structure) - The planters are located onto the supported steel work
using a crane
The beautiful Ivy WallPlanter system uses the same screen meshing as the green screens. It is very strong, 5mm high carbon hot dipped galvanized steel. Each planter box, weighing around 1,450kg saturated, contains 65 shoots of Ivy typically Hedera helix "Woerner" per screen. Each screen is rooted in and grown to the full height required before installation into planter boxes, made from 3mm ship grade aluminum measuring 500mm deep and 500mm wide by length options of 3900, 2600 or 1300. They incorporate a 10mm drainage matting at the base of the planter, which ensures no blocking of the drainage system by the plant roots. They are insulated for both heat and cold and have the capability to protect the roots from either eventuality.
The specialized planting media ensures lifetime stability of the root zone area with minimal loss of volume. It's stabilized porous structure ensures all water and feed is delivered directly to the plant root system and is easily accessed by the plants, ensuring minimal wastage of water and feed. This structure ensures a high level of oxygen in the planting media.
Due to the weight of the WallPlanter system, a robust support structure is required. This support system can be installed from ground level or be attached directly to the building depending on the strength of the structure. The planters are located on to the structure using a crane. For the supply of water and nutrients, a plant room/area of at least 2m2 is required situated as close to the living wall as possible.
The LivePanel System
Some LivePanel System examples
The benefits
- Flexible system can be used both inside and outside
- Great creative freedom in design and choice of plants
- Temperature and sound insulating properties
- Easy installation
- Structurally sound
- Minimal water requirement
- Fire insulating properties
Specification
- Weight load 60 kg /m2 fully saturated
- Module size 1000 mm x 600mm
- Integrated irrigation system
- Recycling of water if required
- Easy to fit around doors and windows and can
be extended to roof areas - Depth of the modules: 164 mm from the face of
the building/wall (excl planting)
LivePanel modules
The Live Panel is a modular construction. The panels are easily adjusted to fit any requirement. The modules have a specially developed substrate, designed to enable the plants to establish and thrive. The panels are installed onto the face of the building /wall and secured by an aluminum frame.
The flexibility of the LivePanel modular system allows unlimited aesthetic possibilities to all those involved with the specification and construction of living walls.
Outside wall? Inside wall? It is possible!
Different shades of green or bright colours? company logo designed in plants? It's all possible with the right choice of plants. Of course we will help you with these choices, using our experience and knowledge of which plants will give the best results.
Low maintenance
The LivePanel modular system is very low maintenance. The rooting substrate is provided with water and nutrition by a fully automated irrigation system. For the outdoor system, a small plant room is required to house the control centre.
Creating a beautiful frame of lush greenery will enhance any open public area, hotel foyers, health clubs etc, presenting a calm and interesting back drop and talking point. The indoor system has an automated irrigation system which draws from an 'in-built' hidden water tank! all that is needed is an electrical socket and well lit location. Hedera Screens can be contracted to carry out all the routine maintenance.
Not only do the green screens look attractive, but they make a very significant environmental impact on our day to day living...
